Opening of 1We Slum Shop huge success
DHAKA – Today 1We - One World Experience opened the second 1We Slum Shop in Dhaka. Special guest was Bangladesh national soccer coach Edson Dido Silva from Brazil, who opened the shop officially. With the 1We Slum Shops underprivileged people get the chance to become the owner of a small grocery in the slums.
1We - One World Experience is the new style development organization. “The organization supports people to empower themselves with just simple tools such as a 1We Rickshaw or a 1We Slum Shop”, Steven Kruit, the 1We Supervisor in Bangladesh, explained.
First customers
In November 2008 the first 1We Slum Shop in Bangladesh officially opened its doors. Today owner Shamor Marak (20), a poor boy from Kamalpur, received his first customers in the second 1We Slum Shop in the slum area of East Bhatara. So far Shamor’s mother was the only earning member of the family. Now she is suffering amongst others from kidney disease. By getting the chance to start his own slum shop Shamor now is able to support his mother, brothers and sisters permanently. For a period of six months he will be accompanied and trained professionally by a local NGO experienced in supporting people with basic retail outlets.
Fancy grocery
Over the last few weeks Marc Doomernik, a Dutch representative of 1We, has been working hard together with locals from the slum area to get the shop ready for the official opening. The result is a fancy grocery in the purple/orange 1We colours where the local people can buy the first basic needs. “The intention is that the whole community profits from the slum shop”, Doomernik told during the opening ceremony “For this reason we involved particularly local people to realise the shop.”
Sustainable
Dido Silva, Bangladesh national soccer coach, had the honour to open the 1We Slum Shop officially. In his speech he said about the initiative of 1We - One World Experience: “The 1We projects are really helping the people to help themselves. It is a sustainable way to give a chance and opportunity to those people who really need it.” For more information about 1We - One World Experience please visit www.1we.com.
